I made this a 7.6 mile loop with 2,900 feet of total vert, it took just over 5 hours. I needed the East peak of Spruce, but decided to take a right on a cut trail up to the South peak as part of my counter clockwise loop. However just beyond the summit, there is a posted property line, so I couldn’t get to the peak I wanted. I descended 300’ back down the way I came up, then bushwhacked straight at Savage. The bushwhacking was intense at times but I enjoyed every minute of it. It never got boring as the woods were always changing from herd-pathy to ferny glades to steep scrambles to blowdowns. Lots of good views and easy enough to find the canisters. Coming down from Teapot on the SW ridge, I soon picked up very old skidder paths and logging roads that happened to match with my bearing, taking me right back to the cabins. I certainly don’t mind that I’ll have to return to get East Spruce, knowing now after more research that it is accessible if you head due East at it, and there should be a cut path all the way that doesn’t cross the posted land. You just can’t get there from the South Peak, and I’m not sure why that one even has a register and a sign on it. |
