Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Crawford Cliff, NH
Trails
Trails: Crawford Connector, Crawford Cliff Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, June 21, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The Crawford Connector parking lot was totally full. Cars spilled out not only onto Mt. Clinton Road but all the way onto Route 302. It was an extremely busy day in the White Mountains. Mt. Clinton Road past the parking lot is extremely rough and bumpy all the way to the junction with Base Station Road - using it as a shortcut probably doesn't save any time.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Some wet areas on Crawford Connector.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: They'd be fine on the trail, but Crawford Cliff is a sheer vertical cliff, so watch them carefully there.
Bugs
Bugs: Not too bad.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Somewhere on this hike, my sunglasses fell out of my pocket. They're black sunglasses of the type that fit over eyeglasses, and they look well-used (since they are). I'm not expecting to see them again, but if someone miraculously finds them, please e-mail me! I'd love to have them back.

Comments
Comments: I'd tried to redline Crawford Cliff Spur several years ago, in the winter, but the upper part of the trail was unpacked and went along a steep sidehill so I didn't make it to the cliff. The purpose of this hike today was to remedy that. Crawford Cliff Spur has three parts. The first part is a gradual, easy section along the brook. The second part is a steep climb away from the brook - this is where most of the elevation gain is. And the third part is an increasingly rough traverse across an increasingly steep sidehill. Care is required in this section.

The view from the cliff is excellent. It's possibly one of the only places where you can see both Saco Lake and Ammonoosuc Lake at the same time - it provides a great look at the drainage divide between them. It was a nice peaceful spot to have lunch. Despite seeing plenty of other hikers on Crawford Connector, I met just one other hiker on Crawford Cliff Spur - a young woman who, strangely, was hiking barefoot. I didn't say anything, but Crawford Cliff Spur is quite rough and rocky in places - not the sort of place I'd expect to see barefoot hikers. I hope she was OK.

My sunglasses must have slipped out of my pocket at some point of this hike, probably on Crawford Cliff Spur. Considering the steep dropoffs along that trail, I didn't go back to look for them. Oh well, it was still a nice hike.
