A recent post here from a few days back mentioned a number of blowdowns on the Oregon Mountain Trail between the Carter-Gibbs intersection and Mowglis Mountain -- a group of us had just completely cleared and cleaned this section, and so a couple of us went back up today to see if there was anything new to clean. We took our favorite route up -- Carter-Gibbs, because it's quiet and well-shaded.
There really was not anything new to clean -- just the brushy top of a small (3-inch?), rotted spruce [0.4 miles west of the Carter-Gibbs Trail] that can be easily moved by a couple of people, or cut with a small handsaw. It's a step-over now. Had we a bit more time, or a small saw, we would have taken care of it. Everything else on this trail is old, unobtrusive, and left intentionally, to rot, easily stepped over or walked under. Same for the Elwell Trail between Mowglis Mountain and Carter-Gibbs, and also the same for the entire Carter-Gibbs Trail.
There wasn't really any deadfall on the Oregon Mountain Trail or Elwell Trail, in spite of the recent storm. Quite a bit of deadfall on Carter-Gibbs, though, but we cleaned most of it.
Other items to note: all three trails are a bit brushy wherever there is hobblebush -- we had a pair of secateurs, so we clipped quite a bit, but were on a bit of a schedule, so there's still some left to do. All three trails have some faded blazing, as well, but nothing impacting the ability to follow them.
Normally, we would have taken the Elwell Trail up to near Oregon Mountain and then the Oregon Mountain Trail over the peak and down, back to Carter-Gibbs to make a nice lollipop loop, but because of time, we instead took the short, steep section of Carter-Gibbs between the Elwell Trail and the Oregon Mountain Trail -- this section is in decent shape, and the rope is intact (it was helpful today, with the nearby ledge being wet).
We can also confirm that all three signs at the summit of Mowglis Mountain are intact: the Elwell Trail sign, the Oregon Mountain Trail sign, and the 1951 bronze plaque set into the large glacial erratic near the intersection of the two trails there. Everything is good to go.
