Headed up Crawford path on well packed trails to Mt. Pierce. I noted that the Mizpah cutoff was unbroken. Headed over to Eisenhower, there were some fairly high drifts and almost all previous tracks were obscured. Route finding was a little tricky in spots but not bad. Switched to crampons way too early and ended up postholing a lot when coming out of the Eisenhower/Pierce col. Really only would have wanted crampons for the final assent of Eisenhower. Great views and virtually no wind on Eisenhower.
Backtracked to Peirce, passing several groups of climbers along the way. Next I planned to head over to Jackson. The route from Pierce down to the hut was completely unbroken with very high drifts. Route finding was challenging in some spots and I did go of course once towards the top of Pierce, having to backtrack and find the trail.
When I got to the hut, I assumed that the Weberster Cliff trail would be in the same condition as what I had just descended. I decided to drop out via Mizpah cutoff. I had quite a bit of difficulty finding the cutoff. On my map it was not clear that it was necessary to follow Webster cliff tr. for a short stretch in order to me MC. Finally I broke trail for 0.7 until reaching Crawford path. |
