Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, June 13, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There are several Deer Mtns in Nh, this is the Deer mountain in Pittsburg. There is parking across route 3 from the gate which was still closed for mud season, the sign said. This adds about 0.7 miles each way I estimate.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Easy step overs.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A lot of blowdowns. They were tough to get around and slowed me down. Herd paths are forming around them. I don’t remember any huge ones, most were hand-saw-able. It would take one person maybe a couple hours of work.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Nice quiet trail.
Bugs
Bugs: Not bad.

Comments
Comments: I went up here to bushwhack to the South peak, which is on the NH 200 highest list. The fire tower is on another list too I think. It was a quick road walk past the gate to the trail. This road is part of the Cohos trail actually, and I walked by the turn for the fire tower trail at first, got a little confused. The 2 mile trail is well blazed and in good shape besides the blowdowns, they will slow you down - bring a saw perhaps. I read a few trail reports on how to (and how not to) approach the bushwhack, and following the contour west of the ridge from just below the tower summit, I found good going, and it was actually a fun challenge to navigate. Came back the same way. There are thick or wet areas but they can be avoided. The only view was by climbing up the broken metal stair brackets to the tower. It was a nice view.
