Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of weekday parking on Ravine Road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All major crossings have good bridges.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I walked the entire length of the Al Merrill and Asquam Ridge trails. Both trails have a significant number of blowdowns (Al Merrill is the worse of the two). Most of the blowdowns are easily stepped over or ducked under; several are bigger obstructions leaving hikers no choice except to step off trail (significant trail braiding in spots). I'm not complaining. I'm just stating the facts. It will take a single person with a Silky more than a day PER TRAIL to clear the small stuff. And it looks like the crew will need a chainsaw for the bigger obstructions.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Not bad. There was a cool breeze on Asquam Ridge keeping the worst bugs away.

Comments
Comments: Mt. Jim is a viewless subpeak of Mt. Moosilauke. I went up Al Merrill to Asquam Ridge, continued on Asquam Ridge all the way to Beaver Brook Trail, then back down Asquam Ridge Trail.

Some maps claim there is a view called the 10th Mountain Division Outlook on the Al Merrill Loop. There is a sign there, but the view is now completely obscured by evergreens. There is a decent view of Mt. Blue from Asquam Ridge just northwest of Mt. Jim. Despite the lack of views, it was a beautiful day in the woods.
