Date of Hike: Monday, May 26, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We parked at the end of Townhall Road / Slippery Brook Road (FR 17) and hiked “the back way.” This is my favorite approach to the Baldfaces.

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are minor (non obstructing, will be easy with a hand saw) blowdowns on Slippery Brook and Eastman Mountain Trails. The other two have no blowdowns at all. Slippery Brook Trail has 3 significant/obstructing blowdowns and all 3 are on the trail part near where the roadwalk ends, in an area that is perpetually moose-land. There are also 3 major/obstructing blowdowns on Eastman Mtn Trail. The moose are doing the brushing on Slippery Brook and Eastman Mtn Trails but the other two have no moose sign and really need brushing.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Oh my pupper had herself a day! This is mostly awesome footing for dogs, and she likes rock scrambles so it was perfect.
Bugs
Bugs: Though we had some good, steady wind, the black flies on Eastman are an atrocity. The wet areas and drainage crossings on Slippery Brook are quite the mosquito problem. Other than that the flying bugs were not problematic and we didn’t come away with any ticks!

Comments
Comments: We hiked out and back, heading first to Eastman and then South Baldface. We saw one trail runner and no other people! The trillium are plentiful this year, and the rhodora are just starting to bloom! I have hiked this route multiple times and there is always a really moose-y section right when the roadwalk ends and the true trail begins. Both out and back my pup was spooked but we didn’t see any moose (though one hermit thrush was definitely giving us the stink eye). Though there are almost no blazes on this route it’s really easy to follow as the treadway is clear. There was no snow or ice on this route! Yay for that!
