Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, May 19, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I was the only one in the lightly-used Eastman Brook lot. A sign here would be helpful as it's very easy to cruise right by the entrance.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One of the step stones at the crossing of Eastman Brook was slightly underwater but it's an easy hop.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Eastman Brook: The blazes that were painted when the trail opened in 2020 are pretty faded now. Two trees down between the brook crossing and Thompson Rd. The trail signs on Thompson Rd. are partly obscured by brush. Doublehead: I only went up to the Seavey Meadow outlook but the rubber water bars in this section are full of leaves and dirt.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: They were trying to be annoying but the cool temps and wind kept them at bay.

Comments
Comments: Eastman Brook was mainly dry with a few patches of mud here and there. The soggiest spot, where there is some standing water, is shortly after the brook crossing. The Thompson Rd. section of the trail had some running water and mud.

Thompson Rd.: I walked the road out toward the highway to assess the current condition. Overall it's in good shape but there are some rocks to watch out for. Regular cars with careful and confident drivers can make it to the Doublehead parking area but high-clearance will make life much easier.

Doublehead Trail: Mostly dry.

Cloudy and cool today. Felt more like October or November. A mostly uneventful hike but the most exciting moment was seeing a bear crossing Thompson Rd. It stopped and looked at me for several seconds then continued on its way to do bear things. Neat.
