Barebooted the whole day but there were some sketchy sections. If you love to put on and take off traction every 50 feet then microspikes are the play. Lightly raining and in the clouds made for a slop tastic day. Very slow conditions right now on these trails. Snow doesn’t really show up in any significant amount until closer to 3000 feet, then you have sections of unstable rotting monorail and bare trail. Very annoying. Up the Kinsmans had a few of these sections but everything was wet and slippery even without snow. Going across the cannonballs was probably about 60% snow free but there were some large slow sections of post holing or precariously balancing on unstable snow pack. Also a lot of blow downs in this section that added to the misery. The areas that were snow free were essentially flowing stream beds and more wet rocks. Be prepared to go slow and have wet feet. The super steep section going up Cannon was basically snow free but again wet rocks. Coming down Hi-Cannon wasn’t awful. Mostly snow free, ladders are clear. Doing Kinsmans or Cannon alone would probably make for a decent day, combining them turns this into a slog. |
