Parked at Ammonoosuc parking lot:
Ammonoosuc up -- a moderately steep monorail, followed by solid snow up to the treeline, where some sections require scrambling with both hands and feet. Some trail markers were hard to spot, and the whole leg could sink in if you posthole on trail sides [should consider snowshoes]. It rained all day, making the rocks quite slippery, though the wind wasn’t strong. After the hut, there was no snow in the alpine zone, but because of the rain, the trail itself turned into a flowing stream. The fog was thick, so there were no views from the summit.
Jewel down -- much gentler than the Ammonoosuc, but it’s longer, with plenty of branches along the way to grab for balance. There weren’t any sections completely covered in snow, but the monorail was long and even narrower. In a few spots, there were some nice views in the mist. As with the other trail, the rocks were also quite slippery. |
