Our two labs did well, though they were cold when they stopped moving! Some extra food and a spot in a sleeping bag did wonders. |

Trail from Lafayette Campground to LL Hut is packed and passable with light traction. We stopped at the hut Saturday to fill up water and warm up before hiking up to Kinsman pond to tent out. The Fishin' Jimmy Trail was mostly packed: snowshoes were helpful in spots, but you could pass in spikes instead. There were several ice bulges that were challenging in snowshoes and microspikes. We managed to clear them with snowshoes and poles after some work, but I'd have preferred light crampons and an axe for the last major ice bulge.
Temps and wind made for a cold night at Kinsman pond in our TNF X-25. There were several folks in the shelter who surely had a cold night too.
The hike out on Sunday was pleasant after breaking camp at 6AM in the bitter cold. Once we got moving and the sun came out, we thawed enough to start shedding layers. In the AM, there wasn't much view since the summit was socked in.
We reached LL Hut at around 8:30AM, where the temp was about +8F. We stopped to admire one of the best views of the weekend. Franconia Ridge was picturesque. The remaining hike out to Lafayette seemed easy and passed by really quickly! |
