Date of Hike: Thursday, May 1, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Access road is rather rough, post mud season style, with a big pool yesterday somehow fairly well dried today. Low clearance vehicle owners may prefer to park at a parking area before that pool.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hops today unlike in prior days when Paugus Brook and Whittin Brook had crossings best done in waders.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I hadn't expected to do a report and my memory sucks so I don't remember how any blowdowns there were but Brook had several large spruce & hemlock trees, including a couple falling in and with the trail requiring a wide berth. One of those was a large spruce with a shredded but still attached base on one end and branches holding it up at the other making for a particularly challenging removal I'd expect. West Side had one of those shredded blowdowns but smaller near its junction with Piper, that looked like it would easier to remove. Liberty was its usual mix of nice and eroding sections, with some mud and flowing water. Some of its water bars are working and many are not. Some can be cleaned; others are hanging and need reconstruction. There's a wide wet mud patch down low that is forcing wide go arounds, but I recall it's been there for some time.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fun dog trails.
Bugs
Bugs: None today
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Pair of Merrill leather and fabric boots sitting under a tree at the left side of the parking area

Comments
Comments: Brook is a nice trail for hiking although only when the upper bare ledges are not icy. They were dry and clear today. Even so they are better up than down. Liberty is the oddball in a region of fine trails. Leaf out is starting along 113A so the black flies will soon be out. I didn't see any tree painting that usually precedes a USFS harvest but according to the Sandwich Vegetation Management Project which has been approved there will be a variety of harvesting methods on both sides of Liberty with a prescribed fire along it on the north, perhaps starting in 2026.
