This was a little tougher than expected but still a fun time. I had a 4:00 start, after spending 3 hours filling my truck with trash again along route 2 and hiking Waumbek and Boy Mtn earlier. I attempted a route I didn’t see any reports for, which shows up as a logging road named “hardwood ridge” on Gaia. This isn’t a snowmobile trail. There’s a sign that says camping, and a fire pit. From here I forded the river and found the overgrown road on the other side. There are many blowdowns to crawl under or over and prickers but the moose seem to be maintaining the herd path. At one point I took a wrong fork on a skidder path, not paying attention to gps. I set a new bearing on my compass to bushwhack and soon the peak came into view. The footing was a little uneven and muddy everywhere but the going wasn’t too bad, open woods with some logging regrowth. Filtered views while the leaves are down. Trout lillies blooming and mosquitos already! Last sign in of the jar was July last year. I set a new bearing east to return, ignored any skidder paths, except one good straight section, then eventually came back to the herd path part, which seemed like the way to go because there were swamps and blowdowns all around that area. The whack was 1.6 miles each way, and 4.5 miles for the whole trip. Took 2.5 hours. |
