Trail is gorgeous, dry dirt for the first 3 miles. Last two miles up are an absolute spring slog. The snow is melting and it is DEEP. No surprise for springtime, but still incredibly aggravating as it slows you down quite a bit and is just difficult. Every few steps is a post hole at least a foot deep. There is really no guessing where the packed snow is- even the areas that appear packed are at risk of collapsing in the sunlight. The ladders are still pretty much completely submerged with deep snow or ice surrounding them. Spikes were necessary once the ladders came up. Snowshoes may have helped but I imagine they’d also sink in the slushy, heavy snow. Post holed up to my hips, got my leg stuck and had to dig myself out at one point- I personally am officially waiting for spring to be over at this point lol. Summit was great, perfectly dry with just a bit of snow in the shady parts of the trail. |
