Comments
Comments: Very nice hike on a warm, sunny, April day. Road was bare, most of Scaur was dry, finally hit snow about 3000 ft. In the morning the monorail was firm with little breakthrough. Not so firm if you step off the the side. Had to watch for the monorail closely as it was mostly the same level as the surrounding snow. The snow was good going up the north peak since it was well shaded. Most of the trail over to the middle peak was also stable although you had to follow the monorail carefully. Very good traction going up north peak.
Microspikes all the way to the middle peak however the trail back to the north peak started getting soft with some breakthrough. Half our group changed to Hillsound Pro Crampons for going down the steep north peak. Half still used microspikes and seemed to do fine. The snow was still firm going down the north peak. From there you had to watch the monorail closely and headed down the first 200 vertical feet of Scaur was very soft due to the southern exposure. Lots of breakthrough here. However that was short-lived as the snow disappeared about 3000 ft. From there walking on dirt, no traction needed al the way out to the parking area. Overall beautiful Spring hike of the Tripyramids.
