Several good-sized trees up to South Moat that were across the trail in March have been cut and the path is now clear.
Sign at the junction with the Red Ridge Trail reads "Dugway Rd" that translates to Passaconaway Road.
I hiked and in and out from Passaconaway Road to North Moat. I would guess that there was bare surface for 75-80% of the distance. The snow was on the north slopes or in the cols in the stretches under the evergreen forest. The first snow between South Moat and Middle Moat is very short and can be carefully traversed with bare boots. The ledge slope on the north side of Middle Moat was bare surface with only some wet spots that presented no difficulties. Once into the woods north of Middle Moat there is more snow that was holding firm on the consolidated track. The snow depth was at most 1.5 feet but usually much less. There was more snow between Red Ridge and North Moat. All ledges between Middle Moat and North Moat were bare.
There were very few small spots with standing water although there is some water beneath some of the snow. I don't recall any running water down the trail except some surface run-off on the ledges that can easily be walked through. It is worth carrying microspikes in case the snow surfaces are slippery. I used them for some of the snow stretches.
Great views from all the summits and in open ledges.
Met a couple from Manchester NH who were hiking and out and back to North Moat. Two hikers from Lynn MA were hiking the Red Ridge - Moat Mtn Trail loop. All other hikers were summiting South Moat and Middle Moat. |
