Barebooted to about 3300' elevation, then Hillsound trail crampons to summit and back to the same spot. Bare ground on road walk, snowmobile trail, Haystack Road, all of N Twin Tr, and first part of Firewarden's Tr. Haven't seen this much bare ground hiking in the Whites for months. No one else on this route, but a solo hiker summitted Hale via Hale Brook Trail and arrived the same time we did. When we hit the snow-line, track was very firm (a mix of snow and ice), no need for snowshoes though we did carry them. Early start meant we avoided any afternoon melting/softening of snowpack, as we were off the snow by 11:00 am. Still deep snowpack up high. Great trek to Hale this morning. With warmer temps on the way, snowshoes may well be in order for the top part of Firewarden's Tr. |
