Trail was in great shape except for a few postholes that were easily avoidable. I wore snowshoes car to car and I feel that was the correct choice. A few hikers were bare booting it, but they struggle on the steeps. I caught two single hikers just before reaching tree line and from there the three os us hike together. One hiker (Jim) stayed with me all the way to the hut. The other hiker turned around shortly after getting above tree line. Above tree line we were exposed to snow and 30 MPH winds. Visibility was not much more than 30-40 yards. The trail was undetectable. We kept checking All-Trails to determine where we were every 20-30 yards and would find ourselves 10-20 yards off trail. Jim & I finally made it to the hut and took shelter in a corner nook where we made the decision to turn back and not summit Monroe. Jim stayed with me till we got back down in the shelter of the trees and where the trail was quite visible. We refueled there and hung out for a bit. I then continued to head down and Jim hung around in hopes the weather would clear. Jim was hoping to get Washington submitted. I hope he was able!
All in all it was a great day and good adventure to share with Jim. I hope I run into him again. |
