Date of Hike: Monday, February 24, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Ferncroft Road and lot are nicely plowed. Plenty of room at 8:00AM and in the afternoon.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing of the east branch of the Wonalancet River on the Dicey's Mill Trail is made on a log. The log surface is sufficient to support crossing with snowshoes and no poles.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is a small tree (~4" dia) across the trail well before reaching the junction with the Wiggins Trail. Easy to step over or go around. A good sized evergreen across the trail on the lower section of the steep ascent up the summit cone (above the switchback section of trail). The tree is about 4 feet above the snowpack requiring a low stoop. There is one evergreen hanging over the trail at the junction with the Rollins Trail. It is high enough above the surface to present no problem. There are evergreens intruding in to the pathway on the Walden Trail on the short section to the east outlook ledge.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs (except for bear dogs).

Comments
Comments: The road walk was easy with bare boots (no traction). Used snowshoes for the entire hike except for the plowed road. The snowshoes were the ideal footwear with the current snow surface condition. There was at least one hiker in just boots that left holes. Most of these were very shallow except for deeper holes at the margin of the snowshoe track. Today, all five hikers were wearing snowshoes.
No views due to clouds. Consequently, I didn't bother walking down to the viewpoint. There was only one set of foot prints heading to the north viewpoint. There was one fairly recent snowshoe prints (not a well-developed track) on the Walden Trail and the East Loop. Some snow had drifted in to these prints. The Rollins Trail was used including at least two hikers today.
Nice to chat with Captain Chris and two young hikers from southern NJ.
