The entire route was well packed out, although Tuck's between the fire road and PNVC was somewhat choppy due to the rise in temps and tracks from the USFS skimobile. Wore light traction on this section on both the ascent and descent.
The Lion's Head Winter Route was in the best shape I've ever seen it- climbed up and down it without issue. Crampons and ice axe are necessary, especially on the two really steep sections; I saw someone with just trail crampons slip and fall and come close to really hurting themselves.
Treeline to summit was packed solid; I kept the crampons on but put the axe away and used trekking poles until I got back to the upper end of the winter route, when the axe came back out for the steep downclimb.
Overall a fantastic day on the Rockpile, and other than some moderately strong wind at the summit, weather conditions were as good as they get in February. |
