Comments
Comments: I climbed Passaconaway back in mid-January, but ran out of time to hike over to Whiteface. So today I did that part.
The hike up to Rollins, on Dicey's Mill, was as described last time, just lots more snow. This being a Saturday, there were lots of people, but (thankfully) all but one with snow-shoes; the one bare-booted had suffered a broken strap on his snow-shoes, so that's understandable.
Plenty of traffic on Dicey's Mill, but imagine my surprise when I arrived at Rollins, at the top of Dicey's Mill, to find that the trail over to Whiteface was not broken out. This was a challenge, both physical (even with snow-shoes) and navigational (very glad to have been carrying a GPS app). It took much longer than planned to get over near Whiteface, but you can imagine my joy when I ran into a climber coming the other way! So at least the last part of Rollins was broken out for me, which (as anybody reading this knows) transformed the situation.
Given the delay, I had begun to think of descending on Blueberry, still nervous about those ledges. But as I neared Whiteface there were a couple of groups hiking over to Passaconaway, and the consensus was that the best option was to return via Rollins and Dicey's Mill. Much longer, but no risk of a fall on those ledges.
So I did that, and can now report that Rollins is completely broken out and ready to go... until the next storm!
Eight hours door-to-door, mostly because of breaking out Rollins. But it was a beautiful day in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
