I did a crazy looking figure eight centered on the summit of West Rattlesnake. Old Bridle Path and Ridge Trail had an established track with occasional deep drifts from the recent windy conditions. The remaining trails had no discernable track, but they are broken out now.
Conditions varied from shallow, crusty stretches to pure powder 18 to 24 inches deep. In the morning, you could almost walk across the crusty stretches. As the day wore on, the sun softened up the snow and made it more challenging. The steepest section was on Ramsey Trail. I was glad I was going down that trail instead of up. Breaking trail uphill would have been two steps forward, one step back. As it was, I was able to butt-slide some really steep parts.
When I got back to my car, there were four other cars in the lot. If they all brought snowshoes, the trails should be in really good shape now -- Old Bridle Path especially. |
