As I was in the Crawford Notch area today I popped up to Willard for some sunshine and a view.
This route has been well traveled and there was a good snowshoe track but there was also some soft and loose snow on top. With another thaw/freeze cycle it should set up nicely. I wore snowshoes round-trip to try and keep things in good shape. About half the hikers I saw today were in 'shoes and the rest were in either bare boots or spikes. Unfortunately that was causing some churning up of the track and postholes in places.
This hike is mostly sheltered from the winds so the cold temps (11 degrees when I left the car) weren't too bad. The sun at the top was downright warm. The descent was colder due to walking into the wind but was also quick and easy due to the trail conditions. |
