Snowshoes from start to finish. The stretch on Gail River Loop featured about six inches of fresh powder. Garfield Trail about the same as the Loop. Many of the other hikers on the trail were sporting snowshoes and contributed to a nice sidewalk in the soft powder. That said there is some churned sections and the occasional posthole. C'est La Vie. Temps continued to drop throughout the hike and would best be described as face-freezingly-frigid at the summit. Not a meteorologist but I think the cold should help firm up the sidewalk for hikers tomorrow. And I want to give special shoutout to all the hikers I met throughout the day. It continues to amaze me that I can have a great conversation with a complete stranger half way up a mountain on a freezing cold day in the dead of winter. One of the perks of hiking I guess. Anyway, final thoughts, the trail is in good shape. Dress warm. |
