Starting from Goose Pond Road, the snow is roughly 3-6” and several people had been on the trail since the last snowfall. Hillsound crampons were fine, but the snow is on the dry/fluffy side so there was still some slippage while walking. Whoever had been there before me went to the viewpoint (at about 1.3 miles), then turned around. The trail to the North summit was unbroken and, because I never learn my lesson, the snowshoes were in the vehicle. Knowing that it was only about 0.4 miles to the summit, I decided to go for it anyway. It was a long, slow, energy-draining effort to get there, with snow sometimes mid-thigh deep, but I managed to do it. It took me two hours up and one hour down. Someone had reached the North summit from the other direction, but I was done. I didn’t think that the viewpoint at 1.3 miles was anything special, but this time of year there are decent and consistent views through the trees for the majority of the hike. |
