Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Passaconaway, NH
Trails
Trails: Dicey’s Mill Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, January 31, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking lot is well-plowed, and the tilted port-to-let is a great option versus a frigid snowbank when nature calls
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All crossings bridged except the big boy 2.4 miles in on Dicey’s Mills Trail. The log is snow and ice covered, but there are a few spots of solid ice and snow-covered rocks to make it across. Careful on the edges…I broke through to the river
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Cut and cleared 3 blowdowns, there are 3 significant ones left in the last .6 miles to the summit of Passaconoway
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: One doggo happily in 4-wheel drive…trail is great for pups unless they aren’t good with water crossings
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found a blue hat, placed it in the Lost & Found box at the trail head

Comments
Comments: Took FULL advantage of the mild weather to play around in the Sandwhich Wilderness, and came away with #34/W48!-
-road walk is down to snowy gravel, very bare-bootable
-we foolishly attempted to rock Khatoola KTS and K-10s for the first portion of the trail, but quickly discovered the new snow and drifts required snowshoe trail breaking
-snowshoes were the name of the game to the summit and overlooks for Passaconoway, and even with 5 pairs of snowshoes on trail today the trench was still very soft at the end of the day
-water crossing at 2.4 miles in was deceptive…what I thought was a solid base resulted in me breaking through the snow and ice up to my shin in the river, soaking my boots, socks, and the cuff of my pants 😥 A change of socks and my sea to summit waterproof bags provided a reprieve to get to the summit of Passy, but cold feet kept me from breaking out to Whiteface. Next time!
-Rollins Trail and Walden Trail not broken out
