Comments
Comments: from the trailhead to the first junction at 1.9 miles with Carter Dome Tr. conditions were packed and firm but somewhat bony with lots of rock and roots. we spiked this section and made good time. From there to the junction with Wildcat Ridge trail the snow started gaining depth and the track was packed powder and firm. The last 2 tenths at the crest of carter notch were wind drifted as usual but only minorly. Turning on to carter Ridge we encountered more wind drift for the first tenth of a mile then that disappeared and transitioned to a mostly packed powder previously broken out snowshoe track. we were able to maintain a decent pace through this section with only a couple obstacles. there are still many downed trees in this section but previous people have made some nice work arounds and detours so we werent to slowed up. this continued to the summit of A. At the summit of A conditions changed a lot. The snowshoe trail we followed up to this point turned around and the only track continuing on was a singular ski track in 6 to 8 inches of new snow. putting on snow shoes at this point we continued on towards B, C and D. The conditions from here on to the summit of C were heavily wind drifted and unstable. Many spots you sank in deep even wearing snow shoes. i would guess by the way our poles were sinking in you will likely sink knee to thigh deep without snowshoes. the lone skier also did not sick to the trail in spots so if you follow their track you will fall in!! There are still many hangers and blowdowns in this section. some have work arounds and other do not. my partner and I cut a couple as time allowed. The trail from C to D was much less wind drifted and in places blown clear. It was much more stable and easier to follow. it remained pretty much in that condition till the last hundred feet of D where it got deep and unstable again briefly. We enjoyed a great sunset at the platform and celebrated my partner's halfway point in her Grid project. All in all a great day!!
