It was 1 degree when I started up the Ranger trail around 10am and 11 degrees when I finished on the Lambert Ridge trail. No one had been on Ranger since the snow that fell 3 days ago. There were a couple of inches of very fluffy, dry snow on the trails down low and maybe six inches or so, with some minor drifts, higher up. Nothing to see on the Ranger trail. The junction with Lambert Ridge to the summit was the steepest part of the day, but not too bad. No wind (thankfully) until near the top of the fire tower. It was a beautiful bluebird day and the crisp temps were never a factor (layers!). The upper part of Lambert Ridge was steep coming down, then there were a series of ups and downs that drove me crazy. I was ready for some ‘down’. It seemed that there was more snow on Lambert Ridge than Ranger. After seeing no hiker tracks all day, I was surprised to see recent evidence of a small group of hikers that had hiked up and down the last (or first?) half mile of Lambert Ridge. It looked like they’d tried butt sledding, but there isn’t nearly enough snow for that yet. |
