Fantastic day up high. Need undercast, dramatic clouds and SUNSHINE. Trail is well packed, no postholes. There are some drifts on the ridge that aren't too challenging to get through. Snow pack on south spur is high providing great views on the way up. Saw some polks near the Lodge. Saw a group of college kids on South that came up Snapper, I'm guessing they owned the pulks. Met three ladies from upstate NY doing a Weekend in the Whites. Saw one photographer who came up Beaver Brook and said snow pack was great and it wasn't too challenging. Saw at least 10 skinning up Carriage Rd. Half of them skinned up Snapper from the lodge. I'm guessing the skiing from summit down to about 4k isn't great, as there were a lot of obstacles. Looks good in the lower sections though. Ran into Ken Cutting and Eric Hansen on return, who were starting late. |
