A very good day on these two peaks! We decided on up Dicey's to Pass with an OAB to Whiteface on Rollins to avoid the Blueberry ledges. In the AM, I was able to bareboot up Dicey's to the Rollins junction, my hiking companion wore spikes. Trail is well packed. There is some hard ice under the snow especially down low so just step carefully if you choose to bareboot. Spikes went on for both of us at the Rollins / Dicey's junction for the remaining up and back to Pass summit. Some thick ice flows in this section, but we did fine with just spikes. Back at the Rollins/ Dicey's junction, we put snowshoes on for the OAB to Whiteface. I wore them the whole way OAB, my hiking companion switched out to spikes for the return trip. Both worked well. This section had a some icy spots also and a few old postholes along the edges, but was fairly well packed and at this point, either traction choice would work. The final descent down Dicey's back to the TH we did in spikes - fast and fun! This is a slightly longer route than doing the loop but if you are at all concerned about making it over the ledges, it's a very safe and doable alternative through some beautiful woods. |
