 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Trailhead parking could definitely be hard to access without AWD/4WD |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Postholes |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
A few trickling streams cross the trail that had not totally frozen over yet, all in the first mile or so. I imagine they’ll freeze soon though if the temps stay like today for very long. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
A TON of work has been done by someone, thank you to the trail maintainers!!!
No blowdown issues below Starr King.
There are a couple of stepovers/duck unders along the ridge to Waumbek, but they’re not a problem.
Some ice floes are forming in the first mile or so, not too bad though. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw two pups who really seemed to be enjoying the day despite the cold temps. |
|
 | Bugs: |
None :-) |

It was cold today start to finish, but it was awesome! I tend to dress light while moving & carry plenty of layers for when I stop for a break. When I stopped for any more than a couple of minutes today I definitely felt it!
About 1” of snow and occasional ice floes for the first mile, then more snow & less ice for another 1/2 mile, then more snow & a pretty stable track up to the chimney viewpoint. After the chimney there was about a foot or so off of the track, but the track was good to go.
I bare booted up to the chimney, then wore snowshoes to Waumbek & back, then switched to spikes from the chimney back to the trailhead.
The grey jays were out in force looking for handouts & they appeared to be pretty well-fed! |
