Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: [Ferncroft] Parking lot is well-sanded and plowed. Port-o-John is cleared of ice and snow, and clean! It *does* tilt at a crazy angle, so sit carefully lol

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None of the crossings are bridged on Dicey Mills…the first two are easy to step over, the major one took some time and effort. On the way up we used the log to the right of the trail. On the way back hubby opted for walking the main log and I scooted back across the second log
Trail Maintenance Notes

Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: One lovely doggo, who had to turn back at the water crossing because she was too nervous to make it via the logs 🥺
Bugs
Bugs: None, probably frozen the way all my extremities were

Comments
Comments: Negative wind chill made for a difficult hike, that ultimately ended in us bailing at 3.2 miles in. Road walk to trailhead is pretty icy, we watched a fellow hiker take a nasty spill, but made sure she was ok. The trail is boney until just after the water crossing, with microspikes the right tools for the job. There were a few stretches with just frozen leaves, and many sections of ice flows. The last water crossing was difficult, and we chose to follow two fellow hikers who rock stepped to a fallen log, climbed on the log, then carefully scooted across. About .1 miles after the water crossing the snow became loose, granular, and difficult to compact, so snowshoes are the best tool here. With the wind chills I couldn’t keep my hands or feet warm enough, so we abandoned ship. I’ll get it next time!
