Comments
Comments: With the crazy winds I figured it was a great day to work on NH 500 highest. This was a very easy hike/ bushwack to Flat Mountain (south), besides the difficult crossings where I had to search high and low for a safe spot to cross. I went in Flat Mountain Pond trail approximately 3.3 miles to the second crossing of the Whiteface River. After crossing the river I immediately put on my snowshoes and took a southwest bearing to the summit. It was about 1.3 miles to the summit that involved a little shwacky evergreens, but quickly opened up into some beautiful wide open birch glades right up to the summit. I searched all over the summit between the two large boulders for the register, but there was a cluster of 3 or 4 blowdowns all knotted up in each other and I couldn't locate it. I then went a little further down to the flat summit and was rewarded with some fine views towards the Sandwich range and over to Whiteface. Then I simply followed my tracks back down through the glades back to Flat Mountain Pond trail, where I put on exo spikes and returned the way I had come. Total milage was 9.3
