Comments
Comments: There was a very light dusting of snow at the start of the Ranger Trail, but the trail was wet and weepy from the start. As I climbed, the snow got deeper and there were occasional patches of ice. I finally put on spikes for the water crossing at 1.9 miles. The Ranger Trail remained wet and slippery right up to the junction with Lambert Ridge Trail.

My goal for the day was just to complete the Ranger Trail. Once I reached the junction, I descended via the Lambert Ridge Trail instead of continuing to the summit of Smarts. Although Lambert Ridge was boney in places, there was snow and ice for most of the descent. I kept the spikes on until I was 0.5 miles from my car.

By the way, Lambert Ridge Trail is underrated. It has some gorgeous views of Smarts itself, Cardigan and other points to the southeast.
