Rain and freeze thaw conditions put a lot of black ice on the Ammonusic Ravine tr. Not much snow left and a lot of protruding rocks from Glen pool on up to the brook crossing at 4200 feet. The ascent from the brook to 5000 ft had some sketchy ice fields, but descending back down was a scarier option. Needed either snow shoes to walk over 30 inches of snow or traction to walk over ice. Passable, but use caution. A slip and fall could have an unfortunate outcome. Used trail crampons. On a few short sections, regretted not bringing an ice axe. Smarter choice would have been to take the Jewell trail up until more snow crusted over the Ammo trail. Weather was relatively warm above tree line. The ascent from the lake of the clouds to the summit mostly straight forward. hikers were going up and down the Cog in microspikes. No skiers as conditions were terrible. |
