Comments: Happy New Year's Eve! If you want to skip right forward to April, have I got the hike for you! That's basically what the trail is like. Lincoln Woods Trail is well packed down; some icy patches, some slushy snow patches, some soft-ish snow about 1" deep, and some bare spots. Once you turn onto the Bondcliff Trail, there are more widespread open sections with water on them interspersed with slushy snow. At the left turn where the climb begins (end of the death march), it becomes very bare for a while--there's a lot of exposed rock, including some lengthier sections that will definitely turn your spikes into rock spikes, like it or not. The snow becomes more consistent around 2,500', but it's a partially stable monorail. Problem is, there's too much rock sticking out to make snowshoes work. My hiking partner tried it; failed and switched back to spikes within a half mile. Between Bond and Bondcliff, the trail is a mix of bare rock, minor ice, and (as you approach Bond) very unstable snow. You WILL posthole in this section. You will posthole a lot. You can wear snowshoes if you don't mind beating the h**l out of them on the rocks, but most folks we saw today had spikes on.

While it's April a few months early, the weather was beyond amazing. Not a puff of wind on the walk from Bondcliff to Bond. I've never seen it so windless out there, even in the middle of summer. I'm not sure if anyone will be out there before the next snow, but if you are: BRING ROCK SPIKES. Don't bother bringing the sharp spikes; even if the slushy snow does freeze, it's not at all in the right shape to turn to hard ice.
