Comments
Comments: Spikes were just fine going up, I switched to crampons before the ledges coming down - not necessary, but makes for faster going. Don't bother bringing snowshoes unless you are looking for training weight. Smooth sailing up to the ledges around Mt Surprise then the trail report from Friday is right on - powdery unconsolidated snow on top of ice. Blowdowns cleared up to 3600 and then it's a lot of fun. At this point, easy to get around all of them so really not a big deal but cut my pace in half to manage them all - plan accordingly. I had intentions of continuing on to Carter ridge but wall of blow downs and no broken out trail turned me around to backtrack. Not sure if Imp/Moriah is passable. Whatever, happy first day of winter!
