Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked along the highway - looks like there is room for ~4 cars in the pullout.

Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Breakable Crust
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water is low but many of the rocks were ice-covered. No problem with spikes.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Carter-Moriah on the ridge was pure chaos, especially between the North Carter Trail junction and Mount Lethe. It felt like have the time was spent on herd paths navigating around blowdowns. There were also a few duck-unders above ~3800 feet on the North Carter Trail but that was mostly cleared.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Met one excellent frosted dog working hard to finish her 48.

Comments
Comments: Used rock spikes the whole way. There was soft snow along the ridge but there were so many blowdowns to climb over and around that I didn't think snowshoes made sense.

Imp Trail: Only patches of snow to start. Never got consistent snow cover until after turning onto North Carter Trail. There are a few sections of solid ice though I think they could mostly be navigated around. I felt more comfortable in trashed rock spikes knowing I was pretty safe stepping on the ice. There is a long stretch as you approach the North Carter junction where you are rock hopping over sometimes-frozen/sometimes flowing water on the trail. It requires some care and attentions and makes for slow-ish going.
North Carter: Here you get mostly solid snow cover though there are a few blowdowns that need to be stepped over. I think I had to crawl once. Otherwise easy going and well packed down.
Carter-Moriah: Soft snow and a huge number of blowdowns, especially from North Carter trail to Mount Lethe. Lots of herd paths to route around big stretches of blowdowns. Thankfully there are tracks to follow but it's a mess and pretty slow going.
