 | Date of Hike: |
Saturday, December 14, 2024 |
 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Plenty of space -- 2 other cars when I got there at 7:30 am on a Saturday; 3 when I came down early afternoon. |
 | Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Blue, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular |
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
All rock hoppable. |
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
80 blowdowns from 1.7 miles up Glencliff Trail to South Peak junction. Big blowdown to get to Carriage Road -- requires bushwhacking. Then 30 more blowdowns to treeline. I did not count blowdowns that didn't break my stride (easy step overs) but any that required some degree of maneuvering. |
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw no dogs. Very cold on open ridge. Dogs probably would have done better through blowdowns than I did! |

 | Comments: |
Allow extra time to negotiate all the blowdowns. All doable, just time consuming. Met three hikers who chose not to go to Moosilauke due to large blowdown at beginning of Carriage Road (they did South peak). Met 4 other hikers and we busted through. Spikes were fine for whole trail. Some drifting after South Peak junction, but short sections. Did not put on snowshoes I carried. Windswept on last ridge--spikes were enough. Geared up for above tree line so was fine in 7 degrees with 40 mph winds. Have layers -- good to have face protection: balaclava or buff, goggles, warm layers, shell. Large cairns help you find trail in fog/cloudy conditions like Saturday. |
