Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I was able to get off the road at the trailhead, but to do it I had to pull partway up onto the snow bank. Interestingly, when I returned to my car, a USFS Ranger pulled to the side of the road opposite my car. She just waved at me and drove on, but I wonder how viable parking at this trailhead may be this winter.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All crossings on Pine Bend Brook trail are open and rocky. All were doable, but some were a little challenging, particularly higher up due to relatively high water and icy rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: 5-10 blowdowns on Pine Bend Brook trail as it approaches Scaur Ridge, all relatively easy negotiated. Many blowdowns (probably more than 50-100) above Scaur Ridge junction and continuing over to Middle Tripyramid. However, many spruce appear relatively small and may be easy to drag off trail once they become unfrozen to the ground. There is a hardwood crown between North and Middle and one just below the Scaur junction that will be more work. I was able to free up about 5 spruce tops to throw off the trail.

Comments
Comments: There was quite a range of trail conditions. Stretches of bare ground, wet trail and ice lower down. I used my rock spikes most of the day (particularly helpful descending) on the well consolidated track, but there were some snowshoe tracks that appeared recent. While I carried snowshoes, I think I would have had to take them on and off many times or risk damaging them on rocks. The trail only became consistently snow covered above the rock step area near the Scaur Ridge junction, where the blowdowns would have made snowshoes challenging. The track was still firm enough that I never opted to put them on. There were no tracks heading to the North Slide view or on Sabbaday Brook Trail. I believe I was the only one to come up from the Kancamagus, but a number of people came up Livermore to Scaur Ridge, including Mike, who I enjoyed meeting on Middle Tripyramid.
