Comments
Comments: What a day we had! This is a very tough trail to negotiate right now. Down low there were patches of open ground, semi frozen leaves, slush, crusty ice / snow with breakable crust and lots of wet trail with water running down the middle. The packed path has been washed away in places, replaced with open water in the middle and crusty snow on the sides. Many exposed rocks and roots. The ledgy areas had a combo of packed snow, exposed rock and ice. Up higher, there is a packed path in places, but also still lots of open water. The blowdowns start just before mile 3 and continue all the way to the summit. They get bigger and more numerous the higher you go. Crawl around, crawl under, crawl over, crawl through - all apply. Most of these blowdowns cover the entire trail and getting past them sometimes means wading through the softer snow on the side. Trail finding is difficult in places due to the blowdowns. We bare booted to Mt Surprise and then spikes from there to summit and all the way back down. Snowshoes would have been more of a hindrance than a help on this trail today - way too many obstacles for them to be helpful. Snow squall moving through on our way out adding a dusting of new snow. If you go, allow some extra time. Bring your sharp spikes, patience and a sense of humor. You’ll need it all!
