 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Lafayette campground entrance was plowed. Hikers lot was also plowed but full when we arrived at 10AM. We found a parking spot by the tunnel...there were about a couple more spots left. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
All bridged. The boardwalks for the Around the Lonesome Lake Trail with the snow on top required some balancing footwork which was a bit of a challenge for me...others did not seem to have an issue with it. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
There are is one stepover after the Hi Cannon Trail and another further up that was larger. Both could be cut with a regular saw...forgot to bring mine. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Lots of happy dogs enjoying the hike to Lonesome Lake Hut. |

 | Comments: |
Microspikes were extremely helpful and I think, required. Three-quarters of hikers or more wore spikes.
Hi Cannon was broken.
Once at the frozen lake, we felt the ice was not solid enough to cross so we took the Cascade Brook Trail. Our party were the only ones at the hut.
Although clouds obscured the view of Franconia Ridge, the heavy snow on the trees were a wonder and a delight on their own. It was a fine first snowy winter hike for me.
Eight months of 3x-weekly PT from a knee replacement [developed knee stiffness due to excessive scar tissue] appears to have worked, yay! No matter what the weather or season, it's fabulous to feel the mountain's embrace, and follow the outline of new paths beyond that await this winter! |
