Comments
Comments: Lots of type 1 and type 2 fun today. Used everything in the toolbox. Went up Blueberry Ledge first, barebooted the first couple miles, then donned Hillsounds. Surprising little snow at Ferncroft, only a couple inces. Snowshoes went on around 3,000’, but could be worn sooner. One other set of tracks from Friday. At the ledges, I went to my KTS crampons, and was thankful I had them. The aggressive toe points made for much more confident footing vs. here and a slip/fall here would be high consequence. One really tricky spot that requires a hand hold on a branch that I had to spend a few minutes figuring out safely. Rollins trail was not broken out, the hiker from yesterday turned around at the Whiteface summit. I was making good time so I went for it, and it was a slog. 12”-24” of snow here, I even donned the tails on my snowshoes for the first time. So many blowdown through here, including a huge uproot in the middle of the trail. Many bent over trees from snow weight across the trail as well. Arriving to the site of broken trail at Dicey’s Mill was a sight for sore eyes. Great broken out trail the rest of the way. Stayed in snowshoes until the last couple miles when I went to bareboots. I was solo, so one set of tracks across Rollins if you’re looking to do the loop. It will still be slow going until a couple more go through.
