The trail is packed out by a lot of boots; there is no sign that anyone wore snowshoes. With Friday night’s temperatures it will be a concrete superhighway by Saturday (are those your favorite two winter words or what?). Even if I were first on this trail, snowshoes would have been overkill as it’s pretty bony. Maybe there is 6-8” on the ground. I brought light traction but didn’t need it.
The side trails (Bemis Brook and Arethusa Ripley Falls Trails) only had a single set of boot prints each.
As a side note, the parking lot for Sawyer River Road was NOT PLOWED when I drove by at 3pm. There were two SUVs in the lot but I don’t know that I would attempt it with my CrossTrek right now. Interestingly Fourth Iron (basically across the street) is plowed so that’s a parking option if you are hiking Carrigain this weekend.
Be safe and Happy Thanksgiving! |
