| Comments: |
We did a point-to-point hike from the south end of Moat Mtn. Trail to the north end (Diana's Baths parking lot), using the beautiful Red Ridge Trail to bypass North Moat Mtn.
From the south trailhead up to South Moat Mtn., the trail was mostly dry. Only near the summit, above 2500' or so, did we start to see flakes of snow on the side of the trail. Along the ridge from South Moat to Middle Moat, the flakes were sometimes on the trail itself, but not even deep enough to hide the ground. It did feel wintery, though, with the 25-30 mph winds gusting to 50, and <30 F temperature. On the sloped ledges on the north side of Middle Moat, there were some streaks of ice, which created some puzzles as we were descending, but there was always a solution in which we did not have to step on the ice.
We did not use microspikes Sunday, but there should be more snow and ice up there now than on Sunday, so microspikes should be carried. |
