No snow at the trailhead but it starts pretty quickly after. By about 2500 feet there were a couple of inches of consistent snow cover. I bare-booted to about 3100 feet and then switched to snow shoes until I got back down. I was the first one up the top bit of Mt Kinsman Trail this morning so wound up breaking trail for the last 1.5 miles. There was 6-10" of snow most of the way, this was enough for snowshoes but the trail has a lot of rocks which aren't yet fully covered and that made for a lot of awkward footing. Snow is very soft and powdery. I temporarily lost the trail at ~3550 just past the Kinsman Campground sign - please ignore the bad path going up and instead continue straight. I think enough people did the right thing that it will hopefully be clear going forward. There was a lot of soft snow early but by the time I was heading back down enough people had come through that things were pretty packed down. Also a lot of melting below ~2500 feet.
It was a very windy day today but this route is thankfully sheltered so I didn't really feel it. |
