Castle trail was beautiful but icy today much of the way to treeline. Snowshoes got a free ride. There were melted out/re-frozen snowshoe tracks, and I think this trail would have been a little safer with some snow on it. Plenty of water ice at the scrambles. Decided after the Castles to descend another way. Nice mellow snowfields on up to the top of Jeff.
Opted to head north and go down Valley Way, and hopefully catch a ride back to the car with some friends who were doing Madison & Adams. Microspiked everything except put on crampons for dropping into Edmands Col. Skipped Adams summit to save time but Gulfside had some tricky footing above King Ravine that pushed microspikes in places.
The Airline/ Upper Bruin option looked icier than last week, so I went to the hut and down Valley Way, which was in better shape than I expected- still plenty of ice, but at good grades for light traction. Left the hut @ 3:42 and caught Ed Hawkins at the "Tama Log", we rolled into the parking lot a little before 5, and he thoughtfully drove me to my rig. I had seen no one all day before Ed, but I saw tracks. Glad some folks were utilizing this great mild Presi day. |
