Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Sanded lot.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Wacks avoided the first two, third required a leap going out so we used the bypass on the return, last ones mostly bridged.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One duckunder and a few stepover blowdowns. Still many open but minor drainages or wet areas.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper and Cinnilla had fun. No icing, mild temps with sun, no wind, easy pawbed, modest slopes, plenty of treats, and on the peak playtime; until Pepper had a wardrobe malfunction. But his sweater should be fixable. There are many wet drainages along the trail which were unused for drinking (but they drank when water was offered in a bowl) and in most cases these were avoidable, although Pepper got a couple of rear mud hotfoots when he didn’t clear one. We packed down a new path around this spot which will benefit humans as well.

Comments
Comments: We carried snowshoes but they weren’t needed on the mostly solid path. Georg barebooted, Per and I used Hillsounds, and only on the short spur to the peak did it make much of a difference. We followed the existing Engine Hill and Ravine wacks which made for an easy hike but the main path also looked to be packed out. The third crossing required a leap across flowing water from and to ice ledges, so we used the bypass on the return.

We saw two others at the trailhead but both were apparently just looking for moose antlers in the birch glades. We took a leisurely lunch on top enjoying the fine views and the almost complete lack of wind.

The trails and wacks are a solid trench for most of their length, and if the coming storm brings only modest snow and wind they should remain easy to follow and use.

It was a beautiful day away from the computers, on an easy trail, with great companions. Thanks Georg, Per & Cinnilla for inviting Pepper and me.
