Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The first crossing of Crawford Brook is on two logs. The second crossing of Crawford Brook is on exposed ledges in the riverbed. These crossings can be difficult in high water (not today).
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I have never seen these trails in such good condition. Lots of great trail improvements in recent years. Makes this a much more pleasurable hike than many years ago. There were a few recent blowdowns that were not difficult to get by. The worst was on the Willey Range Trail on the north slope of Mt Willey. It was an evergreen across the trail at about 3 to 4' above the surface. The limb stubs on the tree were helpful in swinging under it. The erosion gouge that had been on the Willey Range Trail on the south side of Mt Field has been leveled off.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs
Bugs
Bugs: There were a few in places. If you kept moving they were not too troublesome.

Comments
Comments: Great day on the west side of Crawford Notch. The best views are at Mt Avalon and Mt Willey. On Cascade Loop, Pearl Cascade was just wet ledge, but Beecher Cascade was beautiful including the small gorge. The majority of the trail was dry. The small amounts of mud or wet ledge weren't worth checking off under the Conditions Section.
Saw Lady Slippers on Cascade Loop. The best Painted Trillium was on Avalon Trail just after the spur trail up Mt Avalon. Saw some Red Trillium on the A-Z Trail. There was some Hobblebush in bloom here and there. Bunchberry flowers down low.
Many hikers out today including a CT man who was involved with Summits on the Air organization. He had contacted France, Spain, and Slovenia from the top of Mt Field.
