Broke Zealand road out Saturday morning. Two with snowshoes and I was pulling a sled. Boots and/or light traction fine for the road now. Camped at 2500' or so and there was about 18 inches of powder at that elevation. From there to hut trail was mostly packed.
Trail was unbroken from hut to Zealand summit. All powder so it was easy trail breaking. Saw 3 others in snowshoes so trail is nicely packed all the way now.
A-Z trail appeared to be well broken. Zeacliff Trail was untouched and Twinway is only broken out to the Zealand spur at least from the Zealand side. At least 24 - 30 inches of snow up high.
If Zealand road sees a lot of rain Monday and freezes up after it might not be a pleasant walk due to lots of boot traffic. I wore snowshoes for most of the hike but as packed as it is now you could get away with just spikes but snowshoes still preferable to me. |
